venezia - murano detour
the morning of the 13th i decided that yes, my hair was getting a little out of control so i went hunting for a barber. and just down the street from the hotel was carlo torrei, my italian barber who is also apparently a marathon runner. it wasn’t too hard to figure that out with the 15 or so marathon medals, photos, and running bibs all over the wall. it didn’t turn out too bad.
i made a last minute decision on the way to the venezia train station after that. it was 5 minutes till my the train to milano but i had the nagging feeling that if i didn’t go back to murano, i would regret not seeing them make murano glass. so i checked my bag into the baggage check, found times for the next few trains going to milano and hopped on the diretto milano vaporetto. it was a rather gorgeous day and i loved being on the water. so while walking through murano looking for a place that demonstrated how they made glass, i caught a glimpse of somebody familiar as we walked toward each other. we both did a double-take and i said “no freakin way!” ALAN GASPERINI - an old friend from high school. what a small freakin world! … and i did get to see them make glass =)
