bring your own big wheel!
I remember looking at photos in the chronicle last year about this crazy BYOBW race down Lombard Street with adults riding down on plastic big wheel tricycle toys. The online video showed people with duck-taped wheels (for traction) skidding down the wet road in 2006. And I thought to myself: GENIUS!
This year, the turn-out was WAY more than I had imagined it was going to be on Easter Sunday. It was a beautiful day for a race and I’d put the number of people there around a thousand or more lining both sidewalks and squeezing themselves even onto the race track. No cars could go down the road for the 30 minutes or so it took for the 3 races.
Costumed participants wormed their way down Lombard at some pretty frightening speeds with crashes happening at every turn. I distinctly caught the scent of beer as the first round finished and even found some racers carrying cans with them as they wound their way down the hill. Haha.. awesome. Something to dull the pain, I’m sure. My favorite was definitely Mario and Luigi. Next year I will definitley be strapping a helmet to my head and joining in the madness. Gotta love San Francisco!
